Now

I am still painting icons, still praying, still Orthodox. I am still attending the Liturgy whenever and wherever possible. What is happening in Russia now – suffocation, the destruction of its culture and its transformation into a Fascist state – is the source of great sadness and pain for me, as well as the role of my Church in that process. Although I am astonished with the scale and speed of deterioration I can see now (I think) that the seeds of it were always there. In fact, the history of the whole Christian Church is full of events of a similar kind – this knowledge does not comfort me but gives some sense of direction.

It happened that I was allowed to experience the reality of God dwelling in the Church and to realize that there is no meaningful life without it. I do not believe that anyone who ever experienced the Church as the mystical Body of Christ can leave it.
